President Jagdeo told the gathering last Saturday at the Guyana Festival that since he was last here “there have been three major world crises…which could create opportunities for countries like Guyana.” The crises he referred to are the escalation of food prices which he said Guyana can take advantage of because of its agricultural base with an abundance of fertile soil and water; secondly climate change where he is plugging away for Guyana to be rewarded for preserving its forests which is gaining worldwide respect and recognition; and thirdly, the global financial crises from which he said has emerged the desire of the developed world to pursue reform of the global financial architecture which will see benefits trickling down to countries like Guyana.
In talking about the country’s progress he said that Guyana has reduced its debt servicing ratio from 94% of its GDP down to 4% of its GDP. He added that there has been unprecedented spending on education and health with seven new hospitals having been built recently. Within the next five years, he said 700 doctors will return to serve their country.
President Jagdeo made these remarks as he spoke at the opening ceremonies of the 14th Annual Guyana Festival last weekend at L’Amareux Park in Scarborough, which was organized to celebrate Guyana’s 43rd Anniversary of Independence. He brought greetings to the Guyanese community on behalf of the Government and people of Guyana.
While the rains forced the opening ceremony indoors it did not deter the masses from having a good time as the crowds still converged at the park to meet and greet the dignitaries and to participate in the various activities to mark the occasion.
High Commissioner Rajnarine Singh in introducing the guest of honour President Bharat Jagdeo, said that under President Jagdeo’s stewardship Guyana has emerged less affected than most countries from the effects of the global financial crises. He also lauded Jagdeo's low carbon initiative which he said is gaining worldwide recognition in terms of preventing degradation and deforestation of tropical forests.
President Jagdeo in his address paid tribute to former president Janet Jagan whom he noted passed away recently. He credited her and her husband Cheddi Jagan with struggles to restore democracy to Guyana.
The program was attended by representatives of all three levels of government. There were also representatives from the Caricom countries and Cuba.
Member of Parliament, Jim Karygianis who spoke prior to President Jagdeo stated that Guyana has given to Canada "the best and the brightest people in the country". Karygianis, in whose riding the event was held, was introduced by Consul General, Danny Doobay, as a friend of the Guyanese community who had lobbied the Canadian Government to the tune of $3.5M to aid Guyana during the flood of 2005 and who continues to lobby for the Independence Festival.
Minister of Health Promotion, Margarett Best also spoke at the ceremony and presented recognition plaques, along with MPP Bas Balkissoon, to President Jagdeo and Consul General Danny Doobay on behalf of Premier Dalton McGuinty. She also brought greetings on behalf the province of Ontario.
Among the other speakers was Michael Lashley who spoke on behalf of the Caricom Consular Corps of the Province of Ontario. Lashley had lived in Guyana and recollected his fond memories of Guyanese hospitality.
Consul General Danny Doobay in declaring the program open gave a historical overview of the festivities over the years. He recalled that the first Guyana Festival was held on a much smaller scale back in 1994 with about 650 persons in attendance and Prime Minister Sam Hinds as the guest of honour. He said that today the festival has grown to become the largest gathering of Guyanese outside of Guyana, bringing together tens of thousands of Guyanese who come for the fun and festivities. He said the festival now includes over 30 events across Canada with 44 organizations taking part and over 250 persons volunteering their services to make it a success. He thanked the main sponsors of the event, Scotia Bank, Caribbean Airlines and Western Union whose support helped to make the event possible.
The 43rd Guyana Independence festivities commenced last month with a dinner and awards gala and last weekend’s program was a continuation of the observance of Guyana’s Culture and Heritage to mark that occasion. The multifarious program included a business luncheon on Friday followed by the trade show, the food festival, arts and crafts display, cultural shows, cricket, dominoes, and soccer, culminating with the duck curry cook off and the Sunday evening lime. The multi faith ceremony on Sunday morning was also well attended with presentations by the Toronto Baha’i Community, Toronto Arya Samaj, Omar Farouk of the Muslim faith and Remington Williams representing the Christian faith.
The winners of the various competitions held for the event are as follows:
Duck Curry Competition: Kevin Ramlochan-DeHoop Village.
T20 Cricket: The Guyana Team.
Softball had a joint winner: Canadian Softball Team and Ontario over 40 Masters.
Soccer: GYU Soccer Team.
Dominoes: Pete Sukhu was the Domino King.
